CareResource is dedicated to assisting seniors, the chronologically ill and their families by relieving them of stress and experiencing more joy.

Who is CareResource

For over 15 years, CareResource has been a provider of non-medical, personal care services to seniors, the disabled, and convalescing adults who need help with their activities of daily living. These services are provided in a person’s home or in a facility. CareResource is located in Daly City, California and we proudly serve the residents of San Francisco county and San Mateo county with our various Support Programs.

What are our Support Programs

Post Hospitalization Recovery Assistance

We’re the people you call if you just need temporary care after a hospital stay, such as care after a fractured hip. Sometimes, you develop higher care needs after a hospital stay and may need to arrange for some personal care services when you return home, or someone to help prepare meals or do laundry or light housekeeping, we can help with these tasks. We can provide for as much as 24-hours of care daily, for the first few weeks after a hospital discharge and then reduced as you get better.

Change of Condition Assistance

We’re the people you call if there is a serious change in your condition and you need long-term care. We assist in your activities of daily living and help you manage your disease such as congestive heart failure or a new diagnosis. (example: a stroke patient with a weaker side may need transfers from wheelchair to bed; a Parkinson’s patient may need help with mobility; a patient with arthritis may need help with simple but painful tasks such as dressing and showering).

Dementia Care Assistance

We’re the people you call if a loved one has been diagnosed with dementia and is more confused and agitated in the early evening hours (sundowner). We can provide a caregiver during the evening, specially, in an assisted living facility with difficult staffing ratios during the evening shifts. Someone you know who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and need round-the-clock for his safety can benefit from our care. We can provide staff to help you manage the unpredictability of dementia and prevent discharge decisions in a facility caused by a resident’s decline.

Quality of Life Enhancement Assistance

We’re the people you call if you need someone to accompany and escort you or a loved one to maintain an outside social life such as visiting the family for a holiday or spending time doing something special.

What is CareResource’s Laughter Circle

As a successful member of the community, we believe in contributing to the common good. We feel this so strongly that as our way of giving back to the community, we’ve developed a laughter club. We call our club the CareResource Laughter Circle. CareResource Laughter Circle gives FREE Laughter as Exercise (Laughter Yoga) sessions to different facilities and groups in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. This is our year-round commitment to supporting and empowering the seniors and caregivers of our community through the power of laughter – therapeutic laughter.

Why Laugh

Nothing can quite compare to a hearty, spirit-soaring laugh. Life is truly good when laughter is frequent.

Life is also healthier. In fact, when it comes to relieving stress, coping with pain, strengthening the immune system, even promoting longevity, more guffaws and giggles are what the doctor ordered. Believe it or not, laughter can be the best medicine. Laughter is an integral part of a healthy and happy life.

Scientific research claims that laughter is both preventive and therapeutic.

1. Physically, laughter is one of the best muscle relaxants.

• Laughter expands the blood vessels and sends more blood to the extremities and muscles all over the body.

• Laughter is an easy to practice anti-stress measure because it reduces the levels of stress hormones, epinephrine and cortisol.

• Laughter reduces pain by releasing the body’s natural pain killer, endorphine.

• Laughter improves the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and aides in digestion.

• Laughing helps clear out the stale air and increase oxygen flow to all of the cells of our body and brain. Thus, many of the physical benefits are the result of the increased oxygen we take in when we laugh.

2. Emotionally, laughter helps us find a way to laugh at life’s little annoyances and larger challenges.

• Laughter helps us develop emotional resilience by neutralizing anger, worry and other negative emotions.

• Laughter counteracts depression by changing a person’s biochemistry and allowing good emotional health regardless of life’s circumstances.

3. Mentally, laughter kindly lets us see the humor even to life’s most embarrassing moments.

• Thru laughter, we learn to laugh at ourselves and love ourselves in spite of our flaws.

• Laughter stops us from being judgmental of ourselves and others.

• Laughter is a great equalizer by releasing us from our inflated and deflated sense of self.

4. Socially, laughter allows for strong social bonding with others. It breaks down social barriers because it is the perfect icebreaker that allows trust among people. This development of friendship decreases loneliness and increases the quality of life.

Why Laughter Yoga

Learning that laughter has profound effects on our minds and bodies and understanding the important role that laughter may have in helping people in coping with the stresses of aging, we at CareResource learned of a novel approach to laughter established by Dr. Madan Kataria.

In 1995, Dr. Madan Kataria, MD, a family physician in Mumbai (Bombay), India, trained in Western medicine, came up with a simple yet powerful approach to laughter. His approach was not a mind-body approach to laughter. Instead of depending on the mind to tell us if something was funny or not, he taught that laughter should come from the body, from the emotions, from the heart, from the soul. His was a body-mind approach to laughter – motion creating emotion. His was a physical approach to laughter, the emulation of emotion instead of a mental function to humor in order to elicit laughter. His was laughter that did not depend on jokes and comedy or one having a sense of humor.

His unique approach helped us see that just by laughing, even though the laughter was not dependent on jokes, comedy and humor, one could still benefit psychologically and physiologically. In fact, seniors, whose cognitive functions may have slowed because of age or disease or whose senses such as hearing or sight may no longer be as sharp could certainly benefit from laughter, Dr. Kataria’s style.

This information motivated us to be trained as a Laughter Yoga Leader and certified with Dr. Kataria’s Laughter Yoga International. Inspired to use our energies to further improve the quality of life of seniors, CareResource started a laughter club – the CareResource Laughter Circle. CareResource’s Laughter Circle goes around to different senior facilities to promote laughter for fitness and health (Laughter Yoga). Our holistic approach aims to help seniors stay in good health and remain as active and independent as possible.

What are the Contraindications to Laughter Yoga

“Laughter Yoga is not for everyone. It is contraindicated for people suffering from uncontrolled high blood pressure &/or heart disease, epilepsy, any kind of hernia, recent surgery, severe backache, major psychiatric disorders and pregnancy.”
